Ghana is building

1.8 million
homes short.

Every one of them will start with concrete. Most of that concrete is still mixed by hand, on site.

58%of Ghanaians now live in towns and cities
3.3%growth in the urban population every year
170,000homes needed every year for 10 years to close the gap

How it is done today

Most concrete
is still made
by hand.

  1. Measured by the headpanCement, sand and stone counted out by the pan, not weighed.
  2. Mixed on the groundTurned with shovels on bare earth, beside the heaps.
  3. Water added by eyeMore water until it looks workable. This is where strength is lost.

Visualisation

The hidden variable

More water,
weaker
concrete.

Water makes concrete easier to work, but every extra litre costs strength. On site, water usually goes in until the mix looks right.

Bottom scale: litres of water per 50 kg bag. 0.40 = 5 kg water ÷ 12.5 kg cement.

How to read the chartBottom scale: litres of water per 50 kg bag of Duramix. 0.40 = 5 kg of water ÷ 12.5 kg of cement in each bag (1 litre of water weighs 1 kg).

SourceStrength curve: ACI 211.1, Table 6.3.4(a), non-air-entrained concrete at 28 days. Litres per bag assume 12.5 kg of cement in each 50 kg bag. Typical 1:2:4 site mix: nominal design range.

The burden

All of it lands
on the builder.

  • LossesSand washed away, cement set hard, stock gone missing

for you.

Specify it, get itM40 in every bag, from the first pour to the last.
Fewer variablesBatching is done at the plant. On site, only the water is left to control.
Easier to costOne product, one bag count, less waste to allow for.
Cleaner sitesNo heaps of sand and stone, fewer deliveries, less to store and guard.
